The Rosarium @ Gypsy Hollow
|
In fact, it came as quite a surprise to find that 'real roses' actually grow wild in the sub-arctic forests. These very wild, rambling, natural plants with their abundant rose hips high in vitamin C are definitely among my favorite friends of all time. But they weren't the only surprises.
Rosa Rugosa, species rose, Hansa, Sitka, by ANY name is a delight. Purplish or mauve pink blooms as large as teacups with a spicy scent that is delectible. The shrub itself is substantial. It will grow five to six feet in height and sprawl at least that much if given room, water, sunshine and a little care.
You don't have to fuss over these species roses. Just keep an eye
on them and spray them in the mornings about once a week (more often if
it rains) with a solution of one quart water, a drop or two of dishwashing
liquid and a teaspoon of baking soda. It's not hard to find time for them,
they fill up one's senses with their beauty and fragrance, you'll be hard
pressed to pull yourself away.
